Washing machine repairs: Strange sounds from your washing machine

By Grover Koelpin 48 comments

If your washing machine is making an unusual
noise like knocking or scratching, we’ll show you what that’s likely to be and how to deal
with it. If your washing machine is just excessively loud, then click the link below, for our video
on how to deal with loud washing machines. First things first, unplug your washing machine
before doing any sort of maintenance. One of the common causes of strange sounds
in your washing machine is due to objects getting into the drum that shouldn’t be there.
Our research has shown us that the main culprits are coins and bra wire. To test the effects
of items in the drum, we had our labs put pound coins in to five different washing machines. Our research showed us that most of the items
will, in fact, stay in the drum or catch in the door seal. Items that say in these areas,
can do damage over time, but the big risk is that they will fall below the seal, between
the drum and the outer plastic tub. Items that get here can protentially write off your
washing machine. Solid items that do make their way between
the drum and the tub can make an excessively loud noise during a wash cycle. But when rotating
the drum by hand You may not hear anything at all. If you do suspect that you have a
item between an item between the drum and tub. Stop the machine and call an engineer. If a broad wire has ended up in your wash.
And if you’re very lucky it might catch in one of the holes inside the drum. So if you
hear a scratching sound, have a look inside the drum, and see if you can fish it out. Finally, any metal items that get caught in
the seal or the drum, and remain undetected can rust over time and pass on that stain
to your clothing. Some of our items made it down here, to the lint filter. If you suspect
something is caught in the filter, you need to check it. Firstly, remove the plastic cover. Before undoing your lint filter, make sure
you have a shallow container in place to catch the water, or if you haven’t got one to hand,
lay down a towel. If your machine has a drain hose, pull it out from its housing, and remove
the cap. Once this is drained, there shouldn’t be much water left in the lint filter. If your machine doesn’t have a drain hose,
lay a towel out and slowly undo the lint filter. Once you’ve got your filter, remove any any
item from within it, and remove any items that have also caught in the housing. If you
notice your filter is a bit moldy and grimy, now would be a great time to give it a quick
wash. Once the filter and it’s housing has been
cleared of debris, just screw the filter back in. If your washing machine is making any
peculiar or strange noises, then turn it off by stopping the washing program. You can find
out how to do this by checking your instruction manual. If your washing machine is noisy and
is unlike anything seen in this video, then go to which.co.uk where you can use our washing
machine repairs tool. But if you do need someone to come out and
fix your machine. You can find a rated and recommended engineer in your area, by logging
on to which local.

yes after finding the bra wire between the tub and drum(from where the sound was coming-in my case it was in right side in my machine drum) i was thinking its impossible to take it out. but I took a normal metallic hair pin and opened its leg and make an L shape ( u can take a wire hanger of your wardrobe perhaps) and put in to the center of the curve of the bra wire and spin the drum with hands gently in order to move it. but in the first turn one head of the bra wire came out from a hole of one (out of three) of the projected plastic parts from its top (plez don’t think the wire will come out from steel drum, it will come out from one of the hole made on the top of projected grey plastic areas on the side walls of drum), which help to move the cloths in the drum while washing or spinning (some machines may  have three or four. mine has 3)…total time which i spent was only 5 mints…feel lucky…when i found the wire in my hand, the shape was still curve from the front …but the same curve turned out like an S shape after scrapping, from side pose. it is perfect shape which help to take it out, and actually cause noise.
insert L shape metallic pin through one of the whole into the center of the curve of bra wire. may be u can use two…depends upon the position of the curve to make it move between drum and tub. good luck.

Not being in any manner technically inclined, I found this very interesting. Takes the fear factor out of taking a look before reaching for the telephone directory.

My washer: When the wash cycle is complete and spin drains the wash water out, the drum comes to like a hard violent halt rather than a gradual stop. Does this again after the final spin. This abrupt stop forces the outter tub to over rotate and the pressure hose gets pulled off. What's up with that??? What's the fix?? Please help me out. I havnt seen a video anywhere yet that addresses this.

This vid helped me solve my problem. Rattling noise coming from the machine turned out to be something in the lint filter as the video pointed out to check. There's something pumping (and spinning) behind the lint filter which is where I discovered the noise was originating. I stopped the machine and cleaned the filter, but after replacing it and continuing the cycle it came back quickly (not even 2 mins). Opened the lint filter whilst the machine was doing its cycle and a small piece of debris came rushing out with water. Problem solved. Make sure you have towels.

Hi, my LG Direct Drive all of a sudden has got very loud when spinning and the drum doesn't spin so easily by hand. It was at first very hard to spin by hand but now it's easier but not as easy as before the trouble started. Do you think we have problem with the bearings?
Thank you so much.
Love watching your videos!

If nothing is stuck in the drum then it's probably not the bearings causing the noise. Washing machine nowadays use less water much much less so you need a lot less detergent detergent has become more concentrated too so use hardly any at all if you use gel or powder you can control what's going in. Treat stains using a bar of household soap before you put it in the machine and don't overload the machine either then you should not hear any noise from your machine. Hope this helps BTW just use the tinyist dot of detergent and remember to pretreat stains before you go putting your clothes into the machine. This will help them get out properly once in there. I hope this will help.
