Hi guys! Welcome to a new flight report. We’re in Portugal and we’re in Porto. Today we’re going to take a very special flight to Newark with an…. A321 Long Range. And this can only mean one thing… departing from Portugal… ‘TAP Portugal,’ of course! It’s one of the first and only airlines which uses a single aisle aircraft for long haul flights across the Atlantic from the European continent to the US. We’re really looking forward to it. You might have noticed that I’m very excited. Normally we’d take a larger plane for this kind of flight. I’m talking too much. That always happens when I’m excited. Please continue. Ok, well…he forgot to mention that we’re flying business class. There is going to be a real business class cabin on this smaller plane for the 8 hour flight to Newark. So stay tuned. See you after the intro. We have about three hours until departure at 6:05 PM to Newark. Dominik: Smells nice Ok, the lounge in Porto doesn’t compare to the one in Lisbon; that’s their ‘TAP’ flagship lounge. That is a great lounge. This one here is pretty small with a few snacks and drinks. There really isn’t as big a selection as in Lisbon. We have about 2 hours until boarding begins. With a plane that size I’m sure boarding will be quicker than an A330. That’s why we can stay in the lounge a little longer than usual. Interesting fact: Even though this is the second largest airport for ‘TAP Portugal,’ they don’t operate their own lounge here. There’s only one lounge for flights for ‘Star Alliance’ member airlines such as ‘TAP,’ ‘Lufthansa’ or ‘Swiss’ for example. It’s called ‘ANA Lounge.’ It’s the only one here at the airport. All right, that was the lounge in Porto. It’s not a ‘TAP Portugal’ lounge. It can be used by every airline that flies here. It is also a ‘Priority Pass’ lounge, which means I can use my ‘American Express” card and the included ‘Priority Pass’ membership. It’s normally full because of that. Today it was not so bad. Now we’re on our way to gate number 11. For some reason departure is 10 minutes earlier. Originally, it was planned for 6:05 PM and it got changed to 5:55 PM. Boarding begins one hour before departure even though it is a smaller plane. I’m pretty excited about it now. I forgot that between the lounge and the gate there’s passport control. We left the lounge a little late, but it seems boarding hasn’t started after all. There’s gate 11. Oh, it did start already. Sometimes that even happens to us. Although it was supposed to start in 5 minutes. At least now there’s no line. Unfortunately, now we can’t show you the empty cabin, which isn’t so easy in a single aisle plane. Is that the right word? Stefan: Yes, single aisle plane is correct. There it is. That must be it. The A321neo in the long range version. There. It will take us to Newark in about 8 hours now. Looks like the catering is still being delivered, so I doubt boarding has begun. We’ve been rushing for nothing. Cool! It looks pretty new. It still has that certain glow of a new airplane. It’s less than a year old and is used for the Porto-Newark route almost daily. Boarding hasn’t started after all and now we have to sit in the waiting area. We’re going to the front. It was strange that the boarding and departure time were pushed forward 10 minutes. 6:05 PM was the official time on the boarding passes and the screens. All of a sudden it was 5:55 PM. Yeah, they wanted to be done faster. Who knows? Paul would say, ‘boarding not boarding.’ We made it. This is the A321neo or A321LR. Which means it’s engineered for longer flights. Dominik will go into detail about that later. ‘TAP Portugal’ uses it for the route Porto-Newark and also other routes. They even fly to Brazil with this single aisle plane. Those are long routes. Pretty cool! As I’m sitting here I’m thinking about a situation we had in Shanghai. Maybe you’ve seen it. Our VPN was blocked there. Dominik made a separate video about our own VPN. From your comments we investigated a little and found ‘Surf Shark VPN.’ They made it possible for us to use it in China. There are a few other perks that come with it. I booked our hotel in Las Vegas by changing my location to the USA and got a better rate than booking from Germany. Same thing goes for rental cars and sometimes even flights. You change the location for the VPN to USA, Brazil, India, wherever you want to fly, and can save a lot of money. We saved a lot of money with ‘Surf Shark.’ Those that know my channel know I’m not the biggest fan of VPN providers. Why should I use a provider if I have my own VPN? Additionally when you change locations, you can also use various Netflix libraries from different countries. That was handy for me. For example, in Indonesia I watched a show in German and it wasn’t even released yet in Germany. Very interesting. Of course security is the most important factor next to the other things we mentioned. We didn’t only test ‘Surf Shark,’ but we also asked them if we can offer some kind of bonus or discount for our viewers because we were really convinced by their product. They said, ‘of course!’ …So you can try it free for one month and on top of that, you’ll get an 83% discount. That’s why we had to put ‘advertisement’ up there. We can’t talk about a product like that and not put a disclaimer there. So, enough about VPNs, perhaps you have some other ideas. By the way, two other perks that convinced us were that you can connect unlimited devices, unlike other providers which limit the number, plus the kill switch. That means the internet connection would shut down if the VPN connection shuts down. As I said before: Security is important. Paul would say, ‘boarding not boarding.’ It’s funny. Officially boarding started, but then we waited a while on the jet bridge. Apparently the plane wasn’t quite ready. It was no big deal. I guess that’s why boarding in general went pretty quickly as everyone was already on the jet bridge. They didn’t let anyone into the waiting area anymore. I think we’ll have an on-time departure. Boarding was still done by classes; first business class and status passengers, then economy class, next to us in a separate line. There are only 171 seats on this plane; 16 business class, 42 in premium economy, and 113 economy seats in the back. Between premium economy and business class, there’s another small galley. Maybe you can see it behind us? All this in a small plane, 171 seats. Normally they would add more seats but they left a few out to give it extra range. Wow, there’s a lot of space here in this business class seat from ‘TAP Portugal’ on their A321neo. Wow! This is not the A321 but the A330neo. We flew that plane before. If you want to watch it, just click on the ‘i’ up there. Boarding has completed. You just saw the video of the A330 from ‘TAP Portugal.’ I think they have the most modern fleet of aircraft in Europe. They have the A330neo and are already flying all over with it, A321neo, and A321LR in the neo version. They always have the same business class seats on board of the A330 as in this A321. There’s also a new business class on the A330neo as you saw in another video. By having the same seats on both aircraft, it’s easy to fix should a flight disruption or delay occur. That’s good thinking on their part. That way they can also plan more flexibility within their fleet. For example, instead of using an A330 they can operate an A321 in case there aren’t enough bookings; however, they’re still the same seats in all three classes of the plane. That gives them a lot of flexibility in their planning, like this flight to New York-Newark. I think that’s very well thought out. This is really quiet. Before departure I already thought I’m not on a plane. Normally it’s noisier. It was just 70 dbA shortly after departure and at the actual departure, it was 77. That’s the lowest I’ve seen so far. Maybe it’s because we’re in the front. It’s pretty quiet and comfortable in this A321neo LR I’m really amazed! 70.3 dbA! Wow! I’m going to show you the seat quickly, a little seat tour. The headphones were already on the seat. There’s an extra little strap for them here. To my left, there’s a compartment with the amenity kit. It’s the same one as on the A330 we took from Newark to Lisbon. We already gave a few of them away at our fan meeting we recently had in Langenhagen, close to Hanover. More than 80 people attended. I’m digressing… Anyway from time to time we do these meet and greets. We announce them on our Facebook page and there you’ll find all the info on them. We also post them on Instagram, so you’re always informed about our fan meetings. From there, you can follow and check them out. Subscribe and you won’t miss the next one. There are a few planned in other cities like Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin Back to the seat. There’s a bottle of water and a package with a pillow and blanket. I don’t need it right now. That was the little seat tour. I haven’t found a menu yet. I’m sure they’ll bring it over shortly. You saw the seat configuration when we boarded the plane. The business class on this ‘TAP Portugal’ A321neo Long Range, that’s a long word, I guess I’m going to use A321LR, it’s in a 2-2 and 1-1 configuration. The rows alternate. Which is good for single travelers. In row 2 or 4 you can sit by yourself. At these so called ‘throne’ seats, there are tables on both sides and a lot of privacy. I really like that. Why are we taking this flight? We wanted to try out this plane and I booked this trip with ‘Miles & More’ miles. We’re flying from Frankfurt via Porto to Newark. I’ll show you how many miles, taxes, and fees it cost us down here. I have to say it really wasn’t a lot and well worth it for a one way flight this long. For example, to Newark with ‘La Compagnie,’ for € 1,100 roundtrip from Paris. That’s an all business class flight. It’s supposed to be really good. We’re going to try that for you on the way back. You can find all these daily changing deals on our website Here we have the menu from ‘TAP Portugal.’ There’s an after take off dinner. Fish as a starter, followed by soup, and for a main course it’s either duck rice or pasta with shrimp. That sounds good. For dessert, there’s ice cream or fruit or the cheese plate of course. Before landing there’s going to be a little snack. Dominik is getting comfortable over there. What I really like about this seat is the length. It’s 2.03 meters long. That is very impressive. Even more so on a small plane like this. Almost feels like in a private jet. Even though it’s not that private, it’s spacious. You don’t need to know everything, only know how to find it. Well said, right?! But seriously, I’m not that familiar with the different types of aircraft. I read a little on ‘Aeronews Germany’ and also directly on the ‘Airbus’ website. This is an A321LR and here it says ‘neo’. That means this is an A321neo and the LR means there are 3 extra fuel tanks built in so the plane can fly a certain distance, like from Porto in Europe to Newark in the USA, in this case. As Stefan mentioned, it is in a 2 class configuration. Yeah that’s all from me. A321LR neo with 3 extra tanks. Amenity kit time! ‘TAP Portugal’ has the same one on the A330. I really like these socks. It’s a nice style. I’m not sure if I would put them on with leather shoes. Right now they’re pretty helpful in case I get cold feet. I only have no-show socks on. I can also use them to go to the toilet because there aren’t slippers. They don’t protect against puddles, but better than nothing. At least they protect a little more than just my thin socks. What else? A sleeping mask, no, wrong way toothbrush, toothpaste, a pen a comb, face/body lotion, lip balm, and the earplugs. So if I wanted to sleep I could get some shut eye. This is a scented cloth. To my left is the controller for the entertainment system. It has a touch screen. There’s a little cursor on it, which I can navigate anything from there. I don’t really need it because the screen is only about 60 cm away and I can just control it with my fingers. I can also switch the light on and off and call the flight attendant. Over here there is the headphone socket and a USB charger for a cell phone. Down there on the left, is the universal power outlet. The seat control, I told you it’s 2.03 meters long, I’ll show you the exact measurements on the side, has four instant position buttons. Lie-flat, two lounge settings, and the standard one for departure and landing. This is the lie-flat function. ‘TAP Portugal’ has 180 degree full flat seats. Unfortunately, the foot-space is pretty narrow. I’ll show you in a moment. 2.03 meters is pretty long, but the space down there feels really cramped. I think it’s because of the two seats in front. My feet go under their table, which is a lot smaller than mine. That means in the rows with two seats, there might be more space for the feet. I won’t complain, 2.03 meters is plenty of space. I could cuddle up in here pretty well. This is the lounge position. It’s pretty comfortable I think. My legs are also up, and that’s a good position to see the screen. When I sit a little higher, the footrest lowers, or further back. I thought so. They have the duck rice, which I’m not too sure about, if it’s only rice with duck, it may be a little dry. I prefer the pasta. Pasta on a plane is pretty much hit or miss kind of like having steak. It can turn out great, or very very bad. Let’s see. What kind of flight report would it be if I didn’t have something to complain about? If I get on board this wonderful flight on the A321LR from ‘TAP Portugal,’ I wish it were clean… Tomato sauce, many spots on the screen It’s not a big deal, but it doesn’t take a lot of effort to just swipe across here before a long haul flight. Enough complaining. We’re in air and they came around to ask what we would like for dinner. It’s a little different on ‘TAP Portugal’ on a smaller plane, similar to flights within Europe. There’s no welcome drink. That’s ok. On the A330neo they had it. No drink service yet. They’re clearly taking their time. Let’s see how it goes. They gave out a warm towel. I tried to log into the WiFi. It’s free of charge for messaging services like ‘Facebook Messenger’ or ‘WhatsApp.’ The selection on the entertainment system is very, very extensive. I can also view them as a list. Lots of movies are dubbed in German. Of course we departed not that far from Germany. There’s a big selection. I haven’t seen some of them. There are also TV shows but only in English or Portuguese, news, the flight map and of course music. The screen is very sensitive. One soft touch and I get where I want to go. ‘A Star is Born,’ I like that movie. Messaging is free, I can receive and send ‘WhatsApp’ and ‘Facebook Messenger’ messages. Browsing won’t work. Email costs €6.99 and browsing, which includes “Facebook’ or ‘Instagram’ costs €14.99 for 100 Mb or €25 for 200 Mb. It’s pretty expensive. If you travel a lot there are a few services out there which you could use. I switch them around a lot, but right now I’m not sure which is best. The crew on board this A321neo is very friendly, but they’re starting the service pretty late. We’ve already been airborne for two hours, there’s no need to rush. It’s still kind of a daytime flight. We left around 6:00 PM and will land around 10:00 PM. That’s because of the time difference. It’s much earlier in New York than in Porto. The flight is around 8 hours. According to the schedule, it’s only about 4 hours long. At ‘TAP Portugal’ they don’t serve a welcome drink, Dominik told you already. There’s also no Champagne. They don’t have that on many airlines, like ‘Iberia.’ They have many very good Portuguese wines. There’s a good Chardonnay, a white wine, and many other drinks to choose from. It’s served at a good temperature. This is an interesting soup. It’s a cauliflower soup with a little spinach ball. Served with a salad and a roll. It definitely looks healthy. I doubt I’ll gain weight on this flight. That’s unusual. I’ve just been asked for the third time if I wanted something to drink. I have to say the crew is very, very attentive. I like that. The work ethic, which we criticized in the past, is very good. The crew is in a pleasant mood. The cauliflower soup with spinach is warm, not too hot but also not cold. Just right. The salad is arugula with oil and a little antipasti. It couldn’t be fresher. The stone test is Dominik’s favorite. The butter really is soft! Perfectly spreadable. That was a little too much butter. The roll is good. This is the recommended pasta dish. Dominik has the pasta as well. It’s pretty good actually, seasoned well with saffron and thyme, or rosemary. Either one, I’m not sure. It’s a pretty generous portion. I’ll definitely be full after this. A little joke from the purser. Nice service, he said he was cooking all morning. I want to say something about ‘TAP Portugal’ and this flight on the A321LR. On this plane, there are two flight attendants in the front galley taking care of the business class cabin. ‘Lufthansa’ has the same ratio on a medium haul flight. This is an 8 hour flight. It took about an hour until service began. That’s ok. On the A330neo it was similar. Then the hot towel arrived, after that, beverage service started. After the beverage service one of the two flight attendants came walking through the cabin and offered refills of any drink the passengers had previously ordered. That was a very nice touch, coming around with the little tray and offering to refill the glasses. I liked that a lot. I have to say the food was a medium quality. Not to sound arrogant or pretentious, but it was just ok. There was no salt or pepper, the butter was just soft enough. That was all ok. The bread was good; not too hard, not too soft. It’s like on the A330neo. Just like on a long haul flight by ‘TAP Portugal.’ I think the crew is doing a great job, I really like what they’re doing here. I’m impressed by, I’ll it make short since I’ve already been talking too much, the background noise which is very pleasant. I’m almost whispering. I really have to talk softly in here so I don’t bother other people. That’s how quiet it is on the A321LR. The main course is finished. My table is cleaned up. I guess now they’re going to serve dessert and the cheese plate. I have to use the lavatory though. There’s one in the front for the 16 business class passengers. Right next to the cockpit. Let’s have a look. Here we are. By now we all know it’s an A321, a smaller plane. That’s why the lavatory is small and narrow. There aren’t many amenities with ‘TAP Portugal.’ Only soap… a few towels in here, no cups. That’s it. Today we didn’t have the usual one-hand scene. I could use both hands this time. The headphones are over-ear and noise canceling. I hear very little around me due to the fact that the plane itself is pretty quiet. The acoustics are also great. I already told you about the selection. I personally like fantasy movies like ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘The Hobbit.’ They have all those – and even in German. Very nice. They also have current Hollywood blockbusters, science fiction, which I also like a lot. There’s something for everyone. I still have 5 hours to watch something. I can’t resist. They have this tasty Portuguese cheese which is wrapped in some kind of wool. I already know that it’s going to be very very stinky. I’m sure I’m not the only one eating it. It will stink up the entire cabin. I can’t say no to ice cream either. It’s macadamia nut ice cream. Of course I’m having port wine with the cheese . Not so much! Oh dear! They’re really spoiling us. Thumbs up for the service at ‘TAP Portugal’ on this flight. I have a big selection in front of me now. I’ll take a quick picture. You know when this happens? Sometimes you really have to dig in there very hard since it’s still frozen. There’s turbulence, we need to put on our seatbelts. You’re supposed to have the belt fastened at all times anyway because turbulence can happen unexpectedly, and then you could fly to the ceiling. If the aircraft dives quickly, in one of the so called ‘air holes,’ you could land up there if your seatbelt isn’t fastened. Better have it fastened at all times. This ice cream is very delicious. There’s also caramel brittle in there. Now the cheese. Why do you think it’s wrapped in plastic? I can smell it through the plastic. Oh my god! Dominik didn’t order it. How am I going to eat it? Ah! It’s like a wrapper or a bandage or even a cast. That’s how they wrap the cheese here. Funny! I’m sure my fingers will stink after this. It’s some kind of soft cheese, very soft on the inside with a very strong odor. It’s served with some kind of jam. The port wine is very tasty according to the menu it’s ‘Graham 10.’ I’m not an expert on port wines but it tastes very nice. Now I can go back to the lounge position for the remaining 5 hours and finish my movie. I’ll see you shortly before landing. I already showed you everything. The seat, the food, the lavatory, what’s around the seat. So there’s only the arrival meal left and the landing itself of course, and our opinion on this product on this A321LR flying across the Atlantic on a long haul flight. Normally, you wouldn’t fly with such a small plane for 8 hours. We still have 1:19 h to land in Newark. They just served the arrival snack. It consists of a little fruit plate with pineapple and orange and here we have fresh vegetables and some turkey and chicken cold cuts. Meanwhile, the sun is slowly setting. Good morning people. I can’t say it any other way. I actually managed to sleep. I don’t even know for how many hours. I fell asleep after dinner on this small plane. I had a rough wake-up from the captain announcing the landing Stefan had the “breakfast.” All I can say is that for a side sleeper it’s a little tight, but if you’re on your back and move all the way to the back of the seat there’s just enough space foot space. The fact that I slept for a few hours says a lot, with the earplugs and the eye mask. I liked being on board the A321LR from ‘TAP Portugal’ a lot. The flight attendants provided excellent service, the crew in general did. You have to get used to how the Portuguese do things. Especially in the beginning. It was great! Nothing to complain about and that says a lot. See you! We are descending. I fastened my seatbelt and ready to land in Newark. It’s getting dark outside. I’m thrilled about this plane. I’m sure Dominik told you the same. It’s so much quieter than in the wide body aircrafts. I really like that a lot. The seat is comfortable. It’s perfect for sleeping. I didn’t want to sleep, but fell asleep anyway; at least 2-2.5 hours. Even though I find the foot space to be too narrow, I think it is a great business class product because they offer seats for both couples and single travelers. You can choose whichever you prefer. What I also like is that on the A330 they have the same cabin as on here. In case of an aircraft change there’s no loss of comfort. It always can happen at ‘TAP Portugal’ on the routes to North America or to Brazil, but that’s no problem. We are waiting to land now and then disembark. Könnt ihr mal ne 2te Staffel machen mit low cost Carrier. Wie scheisse sind die wirklich. Wo sind Fettnämpfchen die man vermeiden sollte.. Wo entstehen Extrakosten usw. Da haben die Leute mehr was von, weil die meisten eh niemals Buissness oder Firstclass fliegen.

Hallo Dominik und Stefan wieder mal ein toller Flugreport. Sehr schön zu sehen wie weit die Technik in der Luftfahrt vorgeschritten ist. Aber das, was ich an eurem Flugreport so liebe ist, das ihr euch das Produkt anschaut und dann eure ehrliche Meinung sagt. Freue mich schon auf den nächsten Flugreport von euch.

Ich bin erstaunt über die Angabe zur Lautstärke. Fleige selbst Business in verschiedenen Airlines. Und mein Eindruck ist, dass ein Single Aisle Flieger immer lauter ist als ein Duo Aisle Airliner. Und Boeing etwas leiser als Airbus ist. Meine Favoriten deswegen 757 und 767 vor 340 und 747-8

Bin letztens mit der Lufthansa A340-300 von Frankfurt nach Dublin in der Business Class geflogen. Echt schade das Lufthansa normalerweise in der kurz/mittelstrecke nur diese pseudo Business in der A320 hat.

Bei den Hotel Preisen müsst ihr aufpassen, aus Deutschland sind alle Kosten gelistet daher ist die Endsumme oft höher – über z.B. die USA sind die Steuern, Gebühren usw oft nicht im Hotelpreis inklusive, wirkt daher billiger.

Die Businesclass war ja voll, an sich hat TAP ja gesagt sie haben insgesammt die Frequenz auf der Route erhöht, hätte nicht gedacht das sie so gut läuft

Ich glaube TAP macht da gerade etwas unglaublich Intelligentes. Sehr moderne flexible Flotte, kein Preisdumping aber immer fair gegenüber den Mondpreisen die z.B. LH ind er Regel für Transatlantik Business aufruft und ein Produkt was jetzt nicht SQ oder Qatar Level ist aber eben alles mitbringt um einen guten Businessclass Flug zu haben.
Wenn die das konsequent durchziehen werden sie sich ihr gutes Stück vom Kuchen abschneiden können, und das zu recht! Gefällt mir gut.

Sehr interessantes Produkt, finde ich super, was durch die neuen Airbus Modelle für neue Strecken ermöglicht werden.

Übrigens fände ich es noch gut, wenn ihr die Lautstärkemessungen immer im cruise machen würdet, es sah zumindest so aus als hättest du sie diesmal im climb gemacht. Das würde für eine bessere Vergleichbarkeit sorgen, da die Triebwerke ja im cruise nicht so viel Schub geben. Ansonsten tolles Video, macht weiter so! 😀

Very clever Business Class cabin lay out with nice colours etc ! Did I miss a hot/cold towel and a glass of sparkling before take off ? Thanks at 26.00 for answering !! Not good enough !! No Champagne !! Oh dear !! Why would you have cups in the dunny ? Have to have Port wine flying from Porto !! Air holes aka Clear Air Turbulence..nasty stuff! Hervorragender Flug mit Ihnen beiden, einige Bereiche, die Aufmerksamkeit erfordern, wie ein Getränk und ein heißes Handtuch, bevor Sie abheben, aber ansonsten ein sehr angenehmer Flug! Gut gemacht !!

Dominik sei gnädig mit dem Reinigungspersonal… ich arbeite selbst am Flughafen und bekomme mit, wie das Reinigungspersonal im Akkord durch die Flieger gejagt wird. Zudem ist es wirklich harte Arbeit die die Frauen und Männer da leisten müssen. Da ist ein kleiner Fleck Tomatensoße doch nicht soooooo schlimm oder 😉

Das Essen ist für Business Class ehrlich gesagt eine Farce. Bei uns in der Beamtenkantine in Luxemburg ist es jeden Tag besser. Zumal sehr schmale Sitze.

Thanks for the English subtitles. It is a nice touch ! Good gracious me, this VIP Lounge at Oporto airport looks like an old theatre in the Opera Night, where the rich have balcony and observe the poor ones from the top.
This time around they allowed you to film. So, it is not a strict norm. Some crew allow, others, not. Argh.

Beim Essen müsst Ihr noch was lernen: Der Entenreis (Arroz de Pato) ist eine portugiesische Spezialität und mal was anderes zum Pasta/Chicken-Einerlei. Mehr Mut beim nächsten Mal! Aber noch schlimmer: Der Käse! Der "Verband" wird natürlich nicht abgewickelt! Stattdessen wird mit einem Messer oben ein "Deckel" abgetrennt und aufgeklappt. Danach gelöffelt. Auf Brot oder Toast. Absolut lecker! Ansonsten toller Channel!
