Making wood thread taps

By Grover Koelpin 100 comments

I guess maybe I should have cut these flutes a little bit wider so they don’t fill with sawdust as much. This one has got much bigger flutes but only four of them another interesting difference here is that this one is actually a little bit wider than the one I made out of a screw and that’s because the screw is always a bit smaller than the hole in the nut if it wasn’t there would be no slack and the screw would tend to get stuck. You can see here this nut has a little bit of plate so by making a thread tap out of a regular screw you can actually cut the thread a little bit tighter than with actual tap and that makes for a tighter fit for the screw which should give you more hold the cool thing about this method is that you can make thread taps for pretty much any kind of screw. For instance with this wood screw with a very coarse thread I can still turn it in with my fingers so there’s no risk of splitting the wood or anything like that and I could use that for a manual fastening or adjustment knob where I would normally have to use a threaded insert and a machine screw because with the threads this course there’s plenty of wood that would have to wear away before these threads wouldn’t hold anymore. So wether you make your own thread taps out of machine screws or bolts for wood or even if you use metal taps on wood there’s definitely no need to spend a whole lot of money on wood thread caps I wanted to see how long it was last but I think I’d wear of that forward / reverse switching on my drill before those threads will give out

your tap will hold better in the drill if you use a bolt with a shoulder. cut the head off the bolt and snug it up.

Was this a reupload? Going through Matthias videos and I got a sense of deja vu here. I was certain I remembered this video from long ago, but date is barely 5 months.

But wood taps account for expansion and contraction of the wood by having deeper threads. The threads are actually longer. It isn't that the shaft of the wood tap is thicker, the threads are just deeper. Metal doesn't expand and contact. Wood will actually split if it contracts around these taps. And if it expands, the screw will become loose. Nobody said that wood taps are crucial (including Marc), but they are better suited for wood.

The video description on this was the best ever. Always wondered why "they" came up with wood screw taps, turns out it was just salesmanship……. I'll stick to my metal ones or use the Matthias W method thanks all the same!

I am new in woodworking. Normally I use lag screws and drill in to the wood as big as the screw shank. Do you think with this method I still need to tab the hole? Does it make difference if you are working with walnut or pine?
Thank you in advance!

I have several different ones I have made over the years. I also have made with grade 8 and have used to tap aluminum with no problem. except you got to use cutting oil and run in and out a lot more just because the are a bit tighter. the other thing they are perfect for it to chase stripped threads

Me personally, I would not waste all that time and just use a regular tap. Been using them for 40 years no issue. All this guy is doing is solving a problem that doesn't exist. Now if he lives in Bumfuck Egypt where they don't know what a tap is, maybe.

I'd like to see your take on how to make an old fashioned wood screw for a Moravian (or other) work bench. Making a 2" diameter wooden screw with a screw box looks like a pain and the only dies I've seen to make them cost 1k or so from Germany. The biggest screw boxes woodcraft sells are 1.5" diameter. How did the old school guys make them that big?
