Functional Stealth Camper Conversation, with homemade shower, rain water collection. Ford E350 van.

By Grover Koelpin 100 comments

(light jazzy music) – Hey again, everybody. Tyler here with my Ford E350. You may remember me from
Forrest’s last video where we did a big tour of my van. And we wanted to do just a quick update addressing a lot of
the questions that were brought up in that video
and introduce you to my new little buddy Casper. We’re gonna go with addressing
the shower question first, because that was huge. Everyone was asking about how I do it without getting everything wet. We didn’t set it up right the first time so we’re gonna do it. So the shower tank is right here. Normally it doesn’t sit right there. It hooks up right here. Shower curtain comes out from where the toilet is now residing. This guy. (light music) And there you have your shower curtain, and you just put a plastic tote there to catch all the water, and pour it in my gray water collection. Goes open here. Hello. (light music) This has been modified from the shelf that rolled down, or
that folded down, sorry. And then I’ve just made
it into a net up here to hold everything. Sleeping bags, extra clothes,
keyboard still in here, and lots of just backpacking
equipment and stuff. But it’s really upped
the storage quite a bit. Made it less of a hassle
with this swinging thing all the time. Guitar has moved down here to a stand. It used to be hanging beside the bed but I found that I would bang into it with my elbow all the time. It just got to be kinda
cumbersome and annoying and would de-tune by
whacking against the wall, which I found to be really irritating. And my laptop kept sliding around. So I made this little bookshelf to kinda store things, and books, and my little drawing tablet. One of the biggest things,
the biggest change, is this little guy. Casper? Oh, he’s not in there. Uh, in his kennel, I
took the door off of a standard kennel and made
some custom hardware. So he has a little place to live. It’s insulated with reflectics. And lined with fleece so
the walls are really soft, and it keeps cool in there in the summer. And it kept him really warm during the winter months for sure. And the trash can has now been converted to Casper’s food. This is a great place to put
it where he can’t get at it. I’ve added another water jug underneath, another 25 liters. And I’ve since gone with
a single burner stove instead of the dual burner, which is a lot easier to deal with. Unscrewing and screwing-in the propane was just getting to be a hassle. Great new location for the toilet. That stops it from coming out. And I’ve also, for the
cleanliness and stuff I installed a 12-volt shop vac. It can reach like every corner of the van. (vacuum humming) Back here if you need
to, the counter, the dog. (laughing) Yeah, that’s been really helpful. In regards to the rainwater, I’ve had a lot of questions
of if I’m drinking it, or storing it, or giving
it to friends, etc., etc. And that’s not the case. It was just a gimmicky
thing that I installed because I saw that the
rainwater collected there. And if it does get
collected, it just gets used on my mountain bike or to
clean mud off my tires. And we’ve moved the water
tank that was way up here down here facing out the
back to wash my bike. So this is the fill port
where you fill it up. And we’ll go out back and check that out. (equipment rumbling) Yeah, initially I had
it, I had the larger tank as the shower tank. But I found that showering with cold water got really irritating. So I switched to the
smaller tank ’cause it was a lot easier to put hot
water in the smaller tank and I only ended up
needing that much water. I end up using this and the shower more now they’ve been switched. And I have much more storage space because this entire tank came down here instead of being where my
clothes and stuff used to be.

I am so stealing the shower idea for when I begin converting my (new to me) type 3 Ambo, I wasn't looking forward to wasting so much space for a dedicated shower. Being able put everything needed into the same tote I'll use to catch the shower water is awesome. Great job

You simply cannot leave the dog in there for long periods of time in that little box in the summertime it will kill that dog flat out,,, if it’s not air condition that dog should not be in there in the summertime,,, I know I’m gonna step on some toes here I’m not trying to put nobody down but I have a dog to and I think the world of him ,,,I had to say something,,,, sorry….

Nice design. I think you can still work on more "secure" storage for the Stratocaster – perhaps something that incorporates a gig bag for protection.

The shower set-up really makes sense… Why dedicate 4-5 square feet to an activity engaged in for maybe 15-20 minutes a day? When living in a compact space such as a van conversion. ever square foot… inch , counts. A single open area makes even the smallest space seem larger.
Remember…. The wisdom of simplicity and The luxury of efficiency.

No such thing as stealth van life. Your only kidding yourselves. We all know what’s up, so does Walmart, police, thieves, other campers, and regular people. I get the lifestyle. I really do. Experienced it in my youth, just be aware your not unseen. People are curious by nature, and some are just nosey. Not much goes unnoticed in public. Enjoyed vid.

We went with Planet Fitness, cost 20 bucks a month for the Black Card membership which is good for myself and a guest, my wife, at any PF in the country. Every 2 or 3 days we both get a little exercise and a shower. We tried the homemade shower in the van but it was a mess.

Í kind of like the idea of the shower tank. It should be quite easy to put it together with PVC 6 in. Pipe in black. A rack in the roof with two pipes and you will get warm water enough for showering twice a day. Jeez you could even use rainwater to shower…nice setup. A plastic bowl large enough, with a drain plug and a hose attached, and a small hole to get the grey water out and you are done.

panel van draw cops like flies to shit, they don't like them because they can't see in. 15 passenger vans airport vans are where its at, most stealthy of all RVs. Ask yourself what type of vehicle is most popular with criminals, yep panel vans, that why they always catch the eyes of the law.

The Reality of #VanLife is a feature length documentary about the over glamorization of a lifestyle that was originally inspired by freedom, and is now being used to capitalize on the trend of wanderlust, bikini clad women, and Westfalias on Instagram. I interview a bunch of Van dwellers about the different challenges they face, and I actually try to make myself van life famous on instagram in the second half of the movie, to comedic results.

I put a ton of work into this documentary and would love it if you would go give it a watch! It is absolutely free!

How do you keep your dog cool in the hot summer days when you have to leave your dog in the van. Vice versa with winter time? I saw the dog kennel you made but I know that van has to heat up at least 20 30 degrees hotter than it is in the summer, if its 100 outside I mean this 130 inside so how do you keep your dog cool? The kennel might be cool but the rest of the van must be hot… I wanted to get a van but with my dog having to leave her when I go to work I don't see how keeping your cool and warm would be possible

Thanks for a very good video.
Your shower is a lot like the one i plan to make for my Westfalia.
I think you might want more room inside your Curtan.
I plan to use a 4’ kiddie pool with a hole in the bottom which goes through the van floor with a fairly long hose that can either go to grey water tank or be diverted to the storm drain.
