Clean Your Washing Machine! (Clean My Space & Affresh)

By Grover Koelpin 100 comments

Since laundry is one picante, spicy,
extra-firey hot topic here, I’ve got another good piece of information for you
about your washing machine. I do get asked a lot about how to keep your washing
machine clean, and while this can be done any time of year, Spring is always a good
time to do it because, hey! Spring cleaning. Depending on which way you
swing, you may prefer to use a DIY solution, which we have a video on, or if
you find it easier to just use our products, I’ll show you how to do that as
well. First off, want to know why you need to
keep your machine clean? I thought you’d never ask. Basically, it helps to keep bad
odors away by removing excess residue, which means you’re gonna get a better
wash, with cleaner, and fresher-smelling clothing as a result. Who wouldn’t want
that? Now, if you do see that your clothes are dingy and come out smelling musty,
this a good sign that it is time to clean your machine. Many Internet, folklore, blog site, web
pages, say that bleach in the machine will clean it, and I will tell you right now it
won’t. Bleach actually can’t do much. It doesn’t clean, because it’s not a cleaner,
it’s chlorine. So it can deal with some bacteria, but the residue in your machine
does not stand a chance. Plus, I never like to use bleach because you never know
what garment it’s gonna stain when you least expect it. So, scratch bleach off
your list. So the idea here is, clean your machine
out regularly so that you can avoid that buildup in mustiness, as opposed to
employing the reactive, spazz out strategy, which usually involves pulling
out hair, late night Googling, pointing fingers, and detective work. It’s really
quite easy to avoid this and finish the task easily, and with next to no extra
effort. To demonstrate how easy this is done, I’m
gonna drop one tablet of affresh washer cleaner into my machine. This is a good
one, because it is safe to use with any washer: top mount or front load. Simply
place the tablet inside the tub of your washing machine, not your dispenser. Set
your empty machine to run a cycle with either the cleaner cycle or with the
hottest water possible, and then let your machine and the product do its thing. This
is surprisingly easy to do. Now, a few other quick tips on how to keep
your machine in great shape: Leave your machine door open at all times
when not in use. You guys know I talk about this one a lot. That way moisture
can dry as opposed to linger in an otherwise unventilated space, which is the
perfect dance floor for mold and mildew. Give your dispensers a good cleaning from
time to time. Some are removable and can be washed with a cloth, some white vinegar
and a cleaning toothbrush. You’d be surprised at how gunky these get. Consider
leaving that dispenser drawer open when you’re not using the machine to prevent
mildew and odors from forming as well. Make sure you’re using the right detergent
and the right amount of detergent. If you’ve got a high efficiency machine,
you’ve got to be using a high efficiency detergent, and you have to make sure
you’re using the correct amount. Because if you’re using too much detergent, you’re
gonna leave extra soapy residue behind in your machine. Wipe your washing machine drum, door, and
gasket, after each use. I know it’s an extra thing to do, but I committed to
doing this when I got my new machine last Spring, and it has looked and smelled
perfect ever since. I hope you guys found this video helpful,
and I hope that you make some sort of machine cleaning routine, so that you can
get your machine smelling, well, like nothing and looking beautiful. The folks
at affresh and I teamed up to teach you how to take the best possible care of your
machine, so a special thanks to them. There’s a button down there that lets me
know you care, so click it if you liked this video, and click this button right
here to subscribe and begin your journey to a cleaner life. Thanks so much for
watching, and we’ll see you next time.

Actually, you are wrong about bleach. Until I used more Clorox to wash my clothes, I never had mildew, mold problem. Since I use much less Clorox, and more Oxyclean, I have mildew and mold developing around the front door and dispenser. Soooo, yes bleach works, very well.

Help Melissa! I have 2 washer dryer sets at my work place (I'm a rental cleaner) that are disgusting! The washing machines are at least 10 + years old, have never been cleaned and are used very regularly for washing very dirty, often greasy clothes. There is a lot of build up of nastiness and the laundry that I do for the rentals almost always comes out of the wash with more stains than it went in with. Is there anything that I can use to clean the build up of grease and dirt, so that the linens for my rentals come out clean after every wash?

How do you clean a washer/dryer machine,it is built into the kitchen(apartment) small space. No outlet st front to remove any fluff(lint!) it is supposed to be self cleaning. Am getting a slight musty smell. I have run a hot wash to help clean. Any ideas?

Great video, but as far the comments you had about bleach I have to disagree.

My washer for example has a clean washer cycle that says specifically bleach only. I agree that products like Afresh, etc, are great cleaners, but we're talking about multi million dollar companies spending millions on research and development.

Now granted I will take into consideration that the bleach in the cycle is meant to disinfect the drum and prevent the accumulation of mold and mildew.

However, the washer itself says bleach only, therefore there must some sort of cleaning properties to bleach, given that only other chemical in the cycle is water itself.

Just a thought

Apr 4, 2017, 1:29 am Reply

imagine that!…..clean a machine that cleans your clothes, sounds counter productive to me……what next?….leave the door to my dishwasher wide open to avoid mold/mildew……guess what brainiac?….just like your dishwasher never needs cleaning or a clean machine cycle…..wash in hot or warm water for each load, a good detergent, and bleach on occasion for white loads…….I have always done this, never had to clean my machine, or had any issues with mold or odors…..then again, I know what the hell I am doing….I don't get washing every load in cold water only, well, seems like you would save energy, and then you still have to run HOT water cycles to clean your machine, if cold isn't keeping your machine clean, how is it cleaning your clothes?……who do you think is saving more money on energy?……running an empty cycle with hot water…..I rather use the hot water to wash my clothes, and keep my machine clean at the same time…….plus my 16 year old Neptune has not experienced bearing or seal failure, can any anyone else say that?….

If the W/M Cleaner is powdered or liquid, it can be put in the Dispenser because tablets cannot be break down even if the water pressure in the dispenser is at the max.
Another tip is that in front loading machines there is a filter which is recomended to be cleaned every 2-3 months, 5-6 years or if an error code appear while the water is being drained or when there is still water in the drum.
If you put too much detergent, sometimes it can come to the dispenser and actually leak out from there.

I have absolutely nothing good to say specifically about LG’s Front Load Washer. Prior to this I had one of the first Kenmore front loading machines bought in 2000 and it worked beautifully so when I went to replace it after 16 years of giving me no trouble I didn’t hesitate about getting another front loader. I HATE THIS LG!!! the clothes smell like swamp water and did from the first load I did … there was no time for Mold to build up … I’ve come to realize that they do not use adequate water to begin with and then shortly thereafter you have the mold to deal with. I can’t use liquid fabric softener anymore and I loved it for sweaters, I run every load with a cup of vinegar plus now I have to wash and dry the freaking machine and it still smells like sh** … I’m really really unhappy with this. I’ve used the Tablets and it half ass fixes for that load and that load only. Oh and the clothes are not only gross smelling but they’re not clean! If someone knows of a sure solution / brand I will dump this brand new duo in favour! ShameOnLG ….they reimbursed their US customers and I believe dumped the stock on Canadians!!! Oh and the dryer … another garbage product … no matter what you set it for and my loads are small, the dryer cuts out and things are never dry!!! Just a complete piece of garbage!!! #LGSUCKS 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
